How is the
work edited/corrected?
Most clients prefer to use Word documents or PDFs.
For the former, I use the Track Changes function, while the latter makes use of highlighting text and sticky notes. I am however,
more than happy to accept hard copy, using traditional BSI proofing markup. I'll work to fit in with you.
Once rates have been agreed, if I haven’t already been sent all of it, the work
to be proofed is usually
emailed to me (although some larger projects are sent on a disc, or using a service such as YouSendIt). I proof
and edit as necessary, and then return it to the client, who makes the necessary amendments.
Generally, the work is then sent back to me to check that all amendments have
been made. Because we are all human, occasionally something may get missed by the person making the amendments, which is why
my fees include a second proofing. It’s always better to be safe than sorry!
Which form of English is used?
I need to know at the start of the project whether US English is to be used or not.
For example, an American client residing in this country may wish his/her work to be Anglicised. As another example, I have
written technical manuals for use in the UK, but which I’ve later been asked to Americanize
for the overseas market.
Formal Oxford English Dictionary versions of certain words, such as ‘organize’,
‘customize’ etc. (note the 'z') are technically correct for UK-English; however, it is generally accepted
that here in the UK, we use the less formal ‘ise’ instead, reserving
‘ize’ for our cousins across the Pond! Some clients prefer to use the
less formal versions; e.g. ‘organise’, ‘customise’ etc. Please advise me of your own personal preference,
or house style, from the outset.
